International Sourcing Guide
Key considerations for cross-border industrial sourcing
Cross-border sourcing adds standards, documentation, logistics and payment considerations. Agree each of these in writing before production begins.
Standards And Equivalence
- Regional standards (EN, ASTM, GB, JIS, IS) use different designations for similar materials.
- Specify the standard your customer or drawing requires, and ask for written confirmation of equivalence.
Incoterms And Freight
- Choose Incoterms that match how much of the logistics you want to control — e.g. FOB or CIF.
- Confirm packing suitable for sea freight: strapped bundles, pallets or crates, with marking.
- Allow for transit time and customs clearance in your planning.
Documentation And Compliance
- Agree the certificate type, packing list, invoice and certificate of origin.
- Check regional requirements such as the EU CBAM reporting for relevant products.
Payment, Insurance And Communication
- Agree payment terms and whether cargo insurance is included.
- Account for time zones and set a clear contact for technical and shipping questions.
