Supplier Selection Guide
How to evaluate an industrial manufacturing supplier
A reliable industrial supplier can show what it makes, how it controls quality and how it documents each order. Evaluate capability, quality systems, communication and logistics before price.
Manufacturing Capability
- Confirm the supplier actually produces the product type you need — for example continuous casting, extrusion or CNC machining.
- Ask for the size range, grades and supply conditions it supports, and which are outsourced.
- Check whether capacity fits your annual volume and delivery rhythm.
Quality Control And Traceability
- Ask which tests are performed: chemistry, tensile, hardness, microstructure, ultrasonic or dimensional inspection.
- Confirm that each shipment can be traced to a heat or batch.
- Request sample certificates, such as an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate, before ordering.
Technical Communication
- A good supplier reviews your drawing and raises questions before quoting.
- Look for clear written answers on tolerances, allowances and standard equivalence.
- Note response time and whether an engineering contact is available.
Commercial And Logistics Fit
- Compare Incoterms, payment terms, packing and lead time — not just unit price.
- Check export experience to your region and the documents supplied with each shipment.
- Agree how non-conformities and claims are handled before the first order.
